Porto Judeu

Porto Judeu sits on the southeast coast of Terceira, where the village drops toward the Atlantic through white houses, dark stone walls, small cultivated plots and a working fishing harbour. It is a place to visit slowly, with short seaside stops, open views and a very visible link between local life, volcanic rock and the ocean.

The parish is tied to the earliest phase of settlement on the island. Local tradition connects the name Porto Judeu with the landing of Jácome de Bruges, but the present-day visit is shaped more by continuity than by legend: old lanes, popular devotion, maritime work and a rural landscape that still feels close to Angra do Heroísmo while keeping its own identity.

In the centre of the village, the Parish Church of Santo António is the main religious landmark. Its exterior is restrained, but the interior rewards a closer look at the scale of the nave, the carved woodwork and the devotional images. Close to this parish life, the Império do Divino Espírito Santo do Porto Judeu de Baixo, also known as Império do Terreiro, brings colour to the streetscape and recalls the Holy Spirit festivities held around Pentecost and Trinity Sundays.

By the fishing harbour, the Fort of Santo António recalls the period when this stretch of coast needed protection from attacks by sea. It is a modest site, but it helps explain the importance of the anchorage and shoreline of Porto Judeu. Nearby, Arcadas do Judeu is known as a diving and snorkelling spot, with striking basalt formations and sheltered water for visitors going with qualified operators.

For swimming, Refugo is the clearest Porto Judeu stop. Once linked to fishing activity, it has been adapted as a bathing area with a semi-natural pool, stair access to the water, changing facilities and a bar. The pool is refreshed by the tides and framed by black volcanic rock; even so, sea conditions should always be respected, especially outside the lifeguarded season.

The Cruz do Canário viewpoint opens one of the most recognisable views on this coast, with the Cabras Islets on the horizon. The islets are a protected area and geosite, important for seabirds and for understanding the volcanic story of Terceira’s south coast. Closer to shore, Gruta das Agulhas at Ponta dos Coelhos is a geological reference point in Porto Judeu; treat it with caution and always check access and safety conditions on site.
