Feteira

Feteira is a quiet stop on Terceira’s south coast, east of Angra, where the land falls from pasture and old lanes toward the Atlantic. Its character is both rural and coastal: stone walls, garden plots, traces of former vineyards and an open seafront almost always framed by the Cabras Islets offshore.

The Serretinha viewpoint is the essential pause. From here the south coast opens wide, with the Cabras Islets in the foreground and Monte Brasil in the distance, making it the easiest place to understand Feteira’s bond with the sea. Offshore, the islets form a protected volcanic area with important seabird habitat; from the road, they give the landscape a strong sense of scale and changing light.

Below Serretinha, the Fajã do Fisher bathing area reveals the parish’s more basaltic shoreline. This is not a sheltered bay, but a lava platform with sunbathing terraces, improved access and a direct view toward the islets. On calm days it can be a pleasant coastal stop; when the swell is present, it is better enjoyed as a scenic viewpoint over the water.

Within the settlement, Feteira’s religious memory begins at the small Hermitage of Nossa Senhora das Mercês, linked to the old vineyard season, and continues at the Church of Nossa Senhora da Consolação, built beside the former road connecting Angra with the eastern side of the island. These are modest places, best appreciated slowly, among white facades, low walls and lanes that still reveal the rural origins of the parish.

The Holy Spirit tradition remains visible at the imperios of Canada das Vinhas and Ponta Nova, two small buildings of devotion and festivity that anchor local identity. Around Pentecost, the band music, coronations, communal meals and bread distribution reveal an everyday Terceira that sits beyond the island’s better-known postcard views.

Feteira works best as a short, attentive visit: stop at the viewpoint, go down to Serretinha if the sea allows, look for the small imperios and leave the main road for a few local lanes. It is a meeting point of fields and ocean, with broad views and a discreet rhythm, ideal before returning to Angra or continuing along Terceira’s south coast.
