Santa Bárbara Beach

Santa Bárbara is one of the longest beaches in the Azores, with roughly one kilometre of volcanic sand on the north coast of São Miguel. It lies in the Ribeira Seca area of Ribeira Grande municipality and is strongly associated with surfing because of its exposure to Atlantic swell. Competitions take place here, and the beach is used by surfers with different levels of experience.

Access, parking, supporting businesses and year-round surveillance are available, although swimmers should still confirm that staff are present and always obey flags. Open ocean and a sandy seabed can produce strong shore break and currents; popularity or the presence of surfers does not automatically make conditions safe for swimming. Respect areas allocated to schools, competitions and other users.
