Terra Alta Viewpoint
Viewpoint at 415 metres on Pico's north coast, with views towards São Jorge and a sweeping landscape shaped by rich native Laurissilva forest.
About this place
Terra Alta Viewpoint lies on Pico's north coast between Santo Amaro and Ribeirinha, above a cliff approximately 415 metres high. Its platform projects over the slope and opens onto a wide view of the Pico–São Jorge channel, São Jorge Island and the green hillsides descending towards the Atlantic. The surroundings also reveal vegetation typical of the Azorean landscape.
The site forms part of the Caminho das Voltas walking route and is one of the most striking panoramic stops in this area of Pico. Because of the altitude, cloud, wind and rain strongly influence the experience. On clear days, the layers of coast, channel and São Jorge are especially distinct. This is an open-air viewpoint with no formal visiting hours. Visitors should follow signs and remain back from exposed edges in adverse conditions.
