Planned hospital recruitment falls short of nursing needs
The Azores plan 40 new hospital nursing vacancies by the end of 2026, while the Order of Nurses estimates a regional shortfall of 250 professionals.
The Regional Government has announced 40 nursing vacancies at hospitals in the Azores by the end of 2026. The planned recruitment comes as the Order of Nurses estimates a regional shortage of 250 professionals.
According to RTP Açores, the regional health secretary announced the measure during a professional induction ceremony involving 71 nurses. Their participation in that ceremony should not be confused with the filling of the announced vacancies.
The figures have different scopes: the vacancies concern hospitals, while the Order's shortage estimate covers the region. For patients and nursing teams, the central question is how much of the identified need the recruitment will actually meet.
