Flores port reconstruction remains on track for 2030 completion

The Azores Government continues to set April 2030 as the target for completing the new port at Lajes das Flores. The facility is vital to the island’s maritime links with the rest of the archipelago and mainland Portugal, and is being built following the damage caused by Hurricane Lorenzo in October 2019.

Reportedly, the combined value of awarded repair and recovery works associated with the port has reached €305.8 million. The project goes beyond temporary measures, aiming to provide infrastructure that can restore safer and more reliable port operations.

The port’s loss of capacity has had direct consequences for maritime supplies to Flores, an island in the Western Group where distance and weather conditions make logistics especially challenging. The situation was further affected by Storm Efrain in December 2022, underlining the need for alternative operating arrangements while construction continues.

Keeping the timetable matters to residents, businesses, fishers and public services that rely on freight transport. For the Azores, the project is also a matter of territorial cohesion: restoring Flores’ port capacity is key to reducing supply-chain vulnerability and supporting the island’s economy.
