Financial pressure rises again at the regional hospitals

The liabilities of the Azores’ three regional hospitals reached €284 million in the first quarter of 2026, an increase of 16.7% over the comparison period reported in the figures.

The total covers the regional hospital units providing specialist care on São Miguel, Terceira and Faial. The trend again puts the funding and operational capacity of these institutions at the centre of the debate around the Regional Health Service.

These hospitals are essential to communities spread across nine islands, where distance and air or sea connections shape access to specialised care. Their financial position can affect service procurement, relationships with suppliers and planning for clinical activity.

The rise in liabilities strengthens the need to follow the management and funding measures directed at the hospital units. In the Azores, this is more than an accounting issue: it is tied to continuity of care, territorial fairness and the confidence of patients and professionals in a health service able to respond across the archipelago.
