Barra Marina enters a new phase under regional leadership

The Azores Government will take a new approach to Barra Marina on Graciosa after the public tender run by the municipality attracted no bids. The decision was announced during the regional executive's two-day statutory visit to the island, which began on 21 September.

Under the previous arrangement, the regional government would support the investment while Santa Cruz da Graciosa Municipality was responsible for the procurement process. With no proposals received, that model will not proceed as planned and the Region will lead the next stage.

A feasibility study is due to come first. Based on its findings, the Regional Government intends to prepare an international procedure for a concession covering the marina's construction and future operation. The executive expects to have further information this year and to build on work already completed.

The change also removes financial and operational responsibilities from the municipality, allowing it to focus on replacing the remaining sections of the public water-supply network. The Regional Government said it was available to support work connected to water quality, lower network losses and a more reliable service for residents.

The visit's programme also includes investment in water supply for agriculture, the handover of homes to young couples and the opening of a former health-centre building adapted for residential care for older people. Passenger air links and maritime freight were also discussed, with freight services having moved from a fortnightly to a weekly schedule.
