Horta welcomes vessel set to strengthen ocean research in the Azores

Azores Ocean has arrived in Horta to support marine scientific research in the Azores.

Azores Ocean, the region’s new scientific research vessel, has arrived in Horta. Its arrival in Faial marks a new stage in supporting marine research operations across the archipelago.

Developed over three years, the vessel is now set to be available for scientific missions connected with the Azores’ ocean. Reaching Horta gives the Region its own infrastructure for offshore work and data collection during research campaigns.

Martec and Atlânticoline will manage the vessel, while the Portuguese Navy will operate it. The arrangement brings together regional organisations and a naval crew to place the ship at the service of scientific activity.

Horta’s role as the vessel’s point of arrival also underlines Faial’s long-standing connection to Atlantic navigation and maritime activity. The ship adds regional capability in a territory where the sea is central to science, the economy and environmental protection.

With Azores Ocean, the archipelago gains a dedicated resource that can support marine studies and missions while reducing reliance on externally sourced research vessels. Its operation creates the conditions for a more regular scientific presence in Azorean waters.
