Azores diesel prices set to rise 46.5 cents above January level

Fuel prices in the Azores rise by 5 to 7 cents per litre in October. Business leaders seek a review of support measures after sharp increases since January.

Fuel prices in the Azores are due to rise on 1 October 2026, with announced increases of five to seven cents per litre. The maximum retail price will reach €1.924 per litre for unleaded 95 petrol and €1.939 for road diesel.

The October change extends a rise that began earlier in the year. Figures presented by the Ponta Delgada Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIPD) put January prices at €1.620 per litre for petrol and €1.474 for diesel. Compared with those levels, October’s maximum prices will be 30.4 cents higher for petrol and 46.5 cents higher for diesel, increases of 18.8% and 31.5% respectively.

In response, the CCIPD has called on the Regional Government to reassess its existing support measures. The chamber acknowledges the measures announced in May, including additional reductions in fuel tax of eight cents per litre for petrol and 13 cents for diesel, but says subsequent price rises warrant another review.

The May package also included measures concerning agricultural diesel, fisheries and volunteer fire brigades, alongside support for energy efficiency in businesses and households. The CCIPD wants continued attention for sectors most exposed to fuel costs and says any review should take national measures into account.

The chamber also reports that member companies in the fuel sector have observed lower consumption, which they associate with high prices. It is asking for regular monitoring of international fuel quotations, prices in the Azores and local demand. For residents and businesses across the islands, the October increase adds to travel and operating costs.
