Azores tourism overnight stays decline after 2025 peak

Tourist accommodation in the Azores recorded 84,000 fewer overnight stays in the first half of 2026 than in the same period of 2025. The result follows a year in which the region achieved record tourism activity.

The cumulative fall continues a downward pattern that has now lasted for nine consecutive months. Overnight stays measure the nights spent by guests in tourist establishments and are a key indicator of how long visitors remain in the destination.

The decline compared with last year’s first half is significant for a sector that plays an important role in the Azorean economy. Tourism directly affects accommodation, restaurants, transport, visitor activities and local commerce, while supporting employment across the islands.

The half-year figures are being measured against a high benchmark set in 2025. Results in the coming months will help show whether the cumulative decline continues through the period of highest demand and how it may affect the region’s annual tourism balance.
