Depression Six passes south of the Azores with effects expected in Flores and Corvo

Tropical depression Six is being monitored by IPMA’s Azores Weather Forecast and Monitoring Centre after being identified by the United States National Hurricane Center. Its influence may be felt in Flores and Corvo between Sunday and Monday.

The forecast calls for rain that may be accompanied by thunderstorms, especially in the Western Group. Based on information available on Saturday, the centre of the depression was around 770 kilometres south of Flores and had a minimum central pressure of 1009 hPa.

IPMA said the system was not expected to cross the archipelago. In the assessment released at the time, the situation did not warrant major concern from regional authorities, although monitoring would continue as the depression developed.

Flores and Corvo are the islands directly named in the forecast, so residents and visitors should follow weather updates and official warnings for the Western Group. Changes in the system’s track and intensity may determine the extent of rainfall and any electrical activity.

Tropical systems near the Azores deserve attention because atmospheric conditions can change quickly. In this case, the official information available places the expected effects at the western edge of the archipelago during the Sunday-to-Monday period.
