September brings contrasting price trends for Azorean households

Azores inflation stood at 2.54% in September 2026, below Portugal's rate, while an 11.32% rise in energy prices kept pressure on household budgets.

Consumer prices in the Azores rose by 2.54% in September 2026 compared with the same month a year earlier. Regional inflation slowed and remained below Portugal's 3.61% rate, yet energy products became 11.32% more expensive. For households, these figures point to substantial differences in how individual expenses are changing.

A falling inflation rate means that prices overall are increasing more slowly; it does not mean they have returned to earlier levels. Energy illustrates that distinction: its double-digit annual increase contrasts with the slowdown in the headline figure and remains relevant to households paying for these products.

Prices also moved in different directions between August and September. Diário dos Açores, reporting figures from the Azores Regional Statistics Service, says clothing and footwear rose by 19.58%, while restaurants and accommodation services fell by 4.13%. These monthly changes cover a different comparison period from the annual increase reported for energy.

The regional figure helps track price trends across the archipelago, but it cannot describe every household budget equally. The impact on each family depends on the goods and services it buys. Inflation below the national rate can therefore coexist with continued pressure on some households, particularly where their spending includes categories experiencing larger price increases.
