Four-island youth survey brings alcohol use into focus

A survey conducted on Corvo, Faial, Flores and Pico indicates that most of the young people surveyed have already had contact with alcoholic drinks. Of the psychoactive substances considered, alcohol had the strongest presence in the published findings.

The figures should be read with care, since trying alcohol and the various patterns of use are not the same thing. Even so, alcohol's prominence in the survey points to a public-health issue that warrants close attention across the four island communities.

The findings give schools, families, health services and local organisations a shared starting point for discussions about prevention, information and support. Responses can be shaped around each island's circumstances and around the ways young people access health resources.

Rather than drawing conclusions about individual participants, the survey helps identify collective priorities. Continued monitoring and health-literacy work will be important for following these behaviours over time and strengthening nearby support.
