Nuvem cable strengthens the Azores’ digital link to the United States and Portugal

Google’s Nuvem transatlantic submarine cable was presented in Lisbon as a new connection between the United States and Portugal, routing through the Azores. The infrastructure places the archipelago on a high-capacity physical communications route across the Atlantic.

The Azores are part of the system’s route alongside Bermuda, in a project first announced by the company in 2023. The ceremony held on 21 July marked a further stage for a project intended to increase the resilience and capacity of international data links.

Nuvem will be joined by Sol, another Google cable whose landing is scheduled for 2027. Both systems use the Azores as a waypoint in connections between the Americas and Europe.

For the Region, these installations underline the strategic importance of the Azores in Atlantic digital networks. Stronger connectivity can support technology activity, services that rely on international networks and investment connected to the digital economy.
