Regional support funds waste clean-up by eleven local bodies

The Azores Government has allocated €36,217 to 11 local bodies for waste clean-up actions on Corvo, Graciosa and São Miguel. The funding is intended for on-the-ground work addressing waste in areas that require local monitoring and intervention.

The measure spreads resources across three distinct island settings, involving municipalities and other bodies able to work close to local communities. Delivery of the actions will therefore be linked to organisations familiar with each island's sites and needs.

The funding follows the Regional Government's acknowledgement that it lacks sufficient internal resources to carry out widespread environmental clean-up operations on its own. The support is designed to add capacity through a decentralised response.

For Corvo, Graciosa and São Miguel, the initiative provides an opportunity to strengthen waste removal and the care of public and natural spaces. Managing these materials is especially relevant in an archipelago where protecting landscapes and ecosystems depends on regular, island-specific action.

The outcome will now depend on the work carried out by the supported bodies. The measure also highlights the role of local organisations in environmental upkeep and in preventing waste from accumulating across the islands.
