Azores close first half with a lower renewable share in electricity generation

The share of renewable energy in electricity generation in the Azores fell by 5.2% in the first half of 2026, according to data released by the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association (APREN).

The decline moves the Region away from its performance in the same period a year earlier and leaves the Azorean renewable share below the figures reported for Madeira and mainland Portugal.

The comparison highlights the particular challenges of an electricity system split across nine islands, where generation and demand must be balanced within isolated grids. Changes in the renewable share matter because they affect the use of local resources and reliance on non-renewable sources.

For residents, businesses and public bodies, the indicator is significant because the energy transition affects supply security, system costs and regional environmental targets. The first-half figures underline the need to monitor how renewable generation can be integrated into the Azorean grids.
