Magnitude 2.4 earthquake recorded near São Caetano felt in Madalena
A magnitude 2.4 earthquake recorded on Pico was felt in São Caetano and Candelária, in the municipality of Madalena.
A magnitude 2.4 earthquake was recorded at 5:50 am on 23 July, with its estimated epicentre around four kilometres northeast of São Caetano, on Pico island.
According to information released by the Azores Seismovolcanic Information and Surveillance Centre (CIVISA), the tremor was felt at a maximum intensity of III/IV on the Modified Mercalli scale in São Caetano and Candelária, both in the municipality of Madalena.
Magnitude measures the energy released by an earthquake, while intensity describes how it is experienced in different places. In this case, the reported intensity applies to the locations for which information was available when the notice was issued.
CIVISA continues to monitor the situation and said it will issue further information if developments warrant it. Civil Protection advises residents to remain calm, be alert for possible aftershocks and follow guidance from the authorities.
